I'm a big fan of Nfld guitarist Duane Andrews and was very fortunate to see him play with Cape Breton fiddler Duane Cote at the ECMA's in Sydney. These are two masterful musicians who obviously enjoy playing together. Their self-titled first album has just been released and they have a tour lined up in support of it. I'm including the itinerary and some info. This is a show to catch.
Renowned Cape Breton Fiddler Dwayne Côtéand Multi Award Winning Newfoundland Guitarist Duane Andrews Release Debut Duet Album With Tour in Atlantic Canada and Maine
Renowned Cape Breton fiddler DwayneCôtéand multi-award winning Newfoundland guitarist Duane Andrews have joined forces to create an album that is both familiar yet totally unique.
Duane Andrews has spent years crafting his own inimitable blend of Gypsy Jazz inspired by the legendary Django Reinhardt and traditional Newfoundland music, while the late great John Allan Cameron simply said it all about fiddler Dwayne Côté whom he called "the best kept secret in Celtic music”. Together, they have released an album that effortlessly fuses all of these elements with the end result being pure listening bliss.
Throughout the self-titled album (set for release in May, 2010), the listener feels the intimacy of a duet album while discovering a wholly unprecedented blend of traditional and jazz stylings that coalesce to create a completely new sound. Each of the ten tracks highlights a different element of this sound, which is truly nonpareil. "The Princess" for example takes a traditional fiddle tune and fashions it as a theme in a standard jazz arrangement, while "Tears" is an interpretation of an old gypsy folk melody. "Beautiful Lake Ainslie" is a sublime tune from the great fiddler Elmer Briand of L’Ardoise, Cape Breton while "Belleville" is a Reinhardt original. http://www.facebook.com/l/9e228;www.dwayneandduane.com
